UPDATE:  This product has now been discontinued and re-released under Olay's Pro X skincare line as ProX Anti Ageing Nightly Purifying Micro Peel.  I do not know why this change occured.  When I finish my last bottle of the original I will be seeking the ProX product out ASAP.

I have been waiting for this product to be available in the supermarket and Coles is where I found my bottle. It is around $50 but online you can definitely get it cheaper.

I have used it nigh on a week faithfully every night, and I must say my skin does look brighter which is after all the purpose of AHA's, this formula contains the correct percent of active glycolic acids which is between 8 - 10% range.  Great product especially with price as their is definitely more pricier options available which have questionable amounts of glycolic acid.

The purpose of AHAs or Alpha Hydroxy Acids originate from fruit (glycolic) and milk (lactic) and their purpose is to perform exfoliation of the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin thus giving the skin a fresher more youthful appearance as those old dead skin cells have been removed, paving the way for younger skin to shine through.  The stimulation provided by these acids is also said to encourage collagen and elastin fibers to grow.  As we age, collagen and elastin fibers in our skin slow their growth which in turn leads to the skin losing its youthful look, as these fibers are part of your skin's physiological makeup.

Luckily, I am not sensitive to AHAs or Beta Hydroxy Acids but if you are, you can still use them regularly once you find what your personal threshold is for your skin to be able to tolerate it. however most cosmetic skincare products on the market will only contain 5 to 7% acids and the FDA has recommendations that these products not exceed the 10% range.  Another important point is the ph Level in the product to enable exfoliation to occur.  Check out this excellent article on ph levels and AHAs

There is one very important stipulation in regards to using these acids regularly and hopefully is something you are already doing to protect your skin and health, and that is you MUST wear a sunscreen any time or period when you are using these acids.  Your skin will burn 50% faster than normal incorporating these acids and I know from experience from an instance in when I was in a rush and did not apply sunscreen before leaving the house.  I don't remember the season exactly but it was not summer and I did not get away with it.  So keep that in the forefront of your mind not only for your skincare regime but for your health also.

For effective sun protection you should apply liberally at least 20 minutes prior to leaving the house.  Most ageing from the sun occurs incidentally, when you hang clothes outside, washing the car, going to the letterbox these small tasks that occur outside is when skin cells receive unprotected doses of UV rays.

There are many AHA products available but to ensure your are buying a quality product look out for these product features:

  • Stable packaging methods with opaque packaging/darkly tinted plastic/packaging
  • Glycolic acid listed high up in the ingredients list
