The green beauty trend has turned into something far more substantial with product ingredients, beauty product staples and brand packaging being formulated for the long term benefit of our beautiful Earth.

No longer just a side issue, an afterthought; our environment and the impact our modern lifestyle has had a profound impact on animals, oceans, marine life and climate that it
is now a major concern with increasingly shocking reports that our environment is still enduring the negative effects from our industrial activities for nearly a hundred years.

Informative news site The Conversation recently reported on the enduring negative effects of a once common chemical that was used in various industries, mainly construction, for certain properties it contained that allowed it to be used as an insular sealant that didn't conduct electricity; made it a ubiquitously used industrial operations ingredient from the early 30s to the 80s.  Chemicals like these don't break down easily; they are retained by our environment and reside in our marine life such as Killer Whales and it then gets passed down to their calves as it is absorbed in the fat in the animal and disrupts the marine food chain.

These far reaching, damaging effects are devastating to the future of our Earth and what is happening now in different industries, is the creation of sustainable, biologically based alternatives to their usual counterparts.  The beauty industry is increasingly proactive with the recent creation of BioBeads by Oat Cosmetics.  Made as a green alternative (with the added benefit of skincare qualities) to the environment damaging micro-beads that were commonly used in self-care products, which are now banned in many countries; the colloidal oat based BioBead is a wonderful example of what is possible.  Colloidal oats are skin soothers aiding in reducing redness, hydration and moisturising the skin.  The BioBead is biodegradable and marine safe and are water soluble which gives them versatility as an ingredient.

Another common household beauty consumable, nail polish remover, and now British founded and USA operating self-care ingredient creator; Green Biologics, have revealed the retail launch of the sustainably produced and plant based renewable acetone nail polish remover that will be sold under the Sally's Beauty 'Beauty Secrets' product line in 3000 Sally stores across the USA.

Australian hair care brand, Kevin Murphy Hair, recently stated on Instagram and their website, that they aim to have new plastic free packaging by the end of 2019, this brand is very focused on our environment which is fantastic coming from a leading hair care brand name and hopefully sets a new precedent among consumers and brands alike to purchase with the environment in mind and how it can benefit as well as quality products for themselves.

We are heading in the right direction now and I hope it continues as time goes on with brands and consumers alike creating and buying the products that help not hinder our environment.  Quick change is not feasible; it will take time to make the required changes as plastics, chemicals etc are part of everyday modern life right now; but where possible long lasting changes can be made such as plastic straws being banned and using metal or thick cardboard straws instead is fantastic, you never know what the future holds with creative ingenuity at the helm.
